Members raise serious concerns with politicians on proposed regulatory reforms and push for a financial advice profession Over the last 12 months, Advocis members have worked extremely hard to push our agenda forward with politicians across Canada. We held legislature days in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick and a federal legislature day in Ottawa. In addition, members from other provinces met with elected officials and participated in consultations with provincial governments and regulators. In total, over 350 Advocis members took part in meeting with over 430 MLAs, MPPs, MPs and Ministers. Advocis members and staff discussed the value of financial advice to Canadian consumers, raising professional standards, and current regulatory proposals currently being examined by the Canadian Securities Administrators. In particular, Advocis members delivered a strong message that the banning of embedded commissions and the imposition of a regulatory best interest duty would hurt consumers by limiting access and choice to professional financial advice for most consumers. This was our busiest year for government relations activity and member engagement in recent times and we will continue to engage politicians in an impactful way in 2017. Advocis will continue to work with the key cabinet ministers and politicians across Canada to move our professions model forward and continue leading the fight against the banning of commissions and the imposition of a best interest duty.
