RE:  Carrier Underwriting Actions amidst the COVID-19 Health Concerns

Further to our earlier communications regarding the health concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus (“COVID-19”), we wish to advise you of important underwriting actions being taken by carriers we do business with.  Understanding these actions will help you better educate your clients about their insurance coverage, and the importance of ensuring appropriate measures are being taken to limit the spread of COVID-19.
 
Actions being taken by Insurance Carriers:
 
Some carriers are implementing changes to underwriting “Travel” for life, critical illness, and disability insurance applications, based on the Government of Canada’s warning updates related to COVID-19.  Generally speaking, in cases where there is travel to China, South Korea and Italy planned in the near future, these cases are being postponed, with reconsideration after returning home to Canada for one month. 
 
When writing applications for your clients, it is best to record planned travel location details (cities and/or regions), and timing.  Paramedical examiners may postpone visits for two weeks if there has been recent travel, and high-risk destinations may be added or removed, depending on the progression of the spread of the virus.
